They come to town like swallows to Capistrano, and then they leave. Greenville is an oasis in the Upstate, and people know it. These same folks who do not live in the city come to town to enjoy the hospitality and parks, and they enjoy police protection, use of roads and greenspace. From 2010 to 2020, the adjacent counties in SC grew by over 72,000. The ratio of new residents in the city to new residents in the five counties is 12.3 new residents for each new resident of Greenville City for the period. That is 5.7 new county residents outside the city for every 1 new resident inside the city. During the same period, Greenville County grew by an additional 63,250. What is the source of the funds, what were the plans for these funds to begin with, and how will they be disbursed after approval is made for use?įrom 2010 to 2020, the city of Greenville grew by 11,059 residents. The issue is how to pay for it and what implications will be of the path taken. The petition has garnered over 1,700 signatures. Kelly started a web petition to redirect funds from a Unity Park observation tower to shading and misters. Period. The original plan for the park included a tower paid for 100% by donations, but now, with the shortfall of gifts, the cost to the city is around $5 million.įrom accounts of the recent council meeting about the tower, the city appears to be either in the "build it" or "don't build it" camps, and that is unfortunate for a community known for its spirit of cooperation and get-it-done attitude. Greenville City Council has given first-reading approval to construction of a tower in the new Unity Park, with about half the funding to come from the city. ![]()
